Jol: I would love to sign Bale

Martin Jol has told Tottenham Hotspur that they would be making a mistake if they sold Gareth Bale.

The former Spurs boss signed the Welsh full-back from Southampton two years ago, but since then Bale has struggled  with injuries and form at White Hart Lane.

Jol, who is now in charge of Ajax even admitted that he would love to have him at the Dutch club, but would have to compete against the likes of Jose Mourinho’s Inter Milan.

The Dutchman told the Wales on Sunday: “I remember seeing him for the first time when he was 15 or 16. He played for Southampton against our reserves and he was outstanding.

“I saw those free-kicks, the corner kicks, the way he was up and down. He had that talent and he still has.

“Put it like this, I would love to have him.”

“When I got Gareth I promised his mum I would play him.

“That’s why he came to Tottenham because there was another choice for him, maybe people didn’t know that. But I knew he was good enough to play and he would get better by playing because he his a fantastic, fantastic player, one of the best talents on the left flank in Europe.

“Maybe a lot was expected of him at such a young age but it depends want you want from him.

“Attacking-wise he is a big talent but that isn’t the only thing. He has a few things he has to improve on, as all youngsters do, but they only come from experience.”

He added: “I don’t think people should worry about his future.

“He’s at a great club but also somewhere where you have to be 100 per cent, you have to defend 100 per cent and always be at your best.

“But he must play games, that is simple. If he plays games he will get better.

“Going abroad could be a good thing if he plays because that is the most important thing.

“Like I said, I said to his mum I would play him and I did. To promise that at clubs like AC Milan or Inter Milan is impossible.”
