Only 3 wins from Wembley!

Liverpool away tonight in the newly rebranded EFL Cup. It may not be pretty.

Those who actually did hide behind the sofa as youngsters so they couldn’t see the television during scenes of unwitnessable tension and horror may find themselves experiencing feelings of deja vu all over again if the home team put out anything like a significantly stronger side than we are likely to.

The absence of European competition on Merseyside means that the priorities of the last two losing finalists in this competition are somewhat different. A win tonight and the Scousers will sniff Wembley and a trophy; a victory for us on the other hand will have Pochettino contacting the circus looking for tips on how to juggle his diary.

A guess at our back five would be Vorm, Trippier, Davies, Carter-Vickers and Wimmer. Janssen will probably start up front which leaves 5 spots to fill with kids and the odd older head. Onomah, Nkoudou and Winks are in the first category, Carroll, Son, Lamela and Eriksen probably make up the latter though it’s possible that Dembele or Wanyama might play so as to add a bit of authority. Personally though I hope that these two plus Alli and Son are given a break before Leicester on Saturday.

Liverpool will also start with boys rather than men in some areas – Firmino, Coutinho and Henderson all started at Derby though which suggests that Klopp won’t treat the game with much levity. The eyes of Sky TV will no doubt be on Kevin Stewart should he start for the home side seeing as how we released him several years ago.

Jonathan Moss is the referee and the draw for the next round takes place tomorrow evening (not that I’m expecting us to be involved to be honest).
