Spurs travel to the KC and the Sunshine Band Stadium on Wednesday evening hoping to build on Sunday afternoon’s excellent performance and win. The mutual back-slapping and premature talk of a high finish will have to stop for a while as the players try and prove that they can walk the walk.
Hull City played well on Saturday and were unlucky to get done by a late Drogba cross that turned into a shot. They took the lead at Stamford Bridge and were still creating chances after Chelski pegged them back so we can expect a tough game in front of a boisterous crowd who after last season are well aware how important a good start to a campaign is.
Three ex-Spurs featured for the Tigers at the weekend, Nick Barmby came on for the injured Dean Marney and the latter is likely to miss out against us with ligament damage. Anthony Gardner managed the full ninety minutes and if he does so again he’ll be close to smashing his personal best for uninterrupted injury-free playing time.
Assuming that Ledley’s comedy knee (“it’s like a balloon!â€) will be saved for the visit to the Hamsters on Sunday, it’s likely that Corluka will be moved into the middle to partner the free scoring Bassong with probably Hutton coming in at right back though Naughton was on the bench at the weekend and the use of his pace will be a temptation to Redknapp. Further forward the foot injury Robbie sustained at the weekend might mean that Crouch gets a chance to meet Gardner and Turner eye to eye something the rest of our midget attack would struggle to do. If Keane is okay however it wouldn’t surprise me to see Defoe drop to the bench instead. If neither Robbie nor Ledley plays, who will be skipper? Modric got the armband in China so I hope he’s busy translating into English the Croatian version of “We’ll fight them on the beaches†ready for the pre kick-off huddle.
In last season’s corresponding fixture we stunk the place out in the first half and I personally was close to giving up. The Championship seemed to be crooking its finger in our direction and our fate seemed inevitable. The second half proved to be one of several turning points in the season though as we were much improved and Woodgate’s late header took the points. We had to rely on defenders for goals against Liverpool but playing on the break away from home Lennon & Modric should be able to create enough chances to make sure that we come back with the three points.
