MF’s Preview: Spurs vs Wigan Athletic

Sebastien Bassong

Wigan come to White Hart Lane on Saturday afternoon for what on paper should be another trouncing for the beleaguered Roberto Martinez & his sieve like defence. The Latics have shipped 18 goals in their last three Premier League games and scored precisely none. Wow! Even West Ham’s great effort of three successive four nil defeats of a couple of seasons ago is massively eclipsed by this.

The last thing Chris Kirkland and co will have wanted to see when looking to their next fixture was a repeat of one where they lost 9-1 last time out, though I suppose they did score that day (with the help of Paul Scharner’s hand). Their chief tormentor in that game last season was Jermain Defoe who will probably be missing due to an ongoing groin problem – maybe pulled whilst reaching for the mobile in his car perhaps?

So it’s easy to be distracted by the glitz & glamour of last Wednesday’s game, the balls and bowls of Monaco and the impending games against the European champions. We should though do our best to put these aside for the moment and concentrate on making sure this weekend’s game goes to form. Our next four league games against the Premier League’s four ‘W’s are very winnable indeed and should we manage anything like maximum points this’ll put down a superb foundation for the remainder of the campaign. Confidence is currently oozing from every pore of the players and with Sandro and Gallas at least still to come in we can quickly be in a position where we intimidate everyone we play.

Team news – Ledley will presumably be rested and the crocked Modric and Gomes’ll join him. Harry’s temptation to ring the changes will be tempered by the fact that there’s a blank weekend coming up but Giovani, Keane, Kranjcar, Bassong and maybe Gallas will be disappointed if they’re not involved at some stage.

For them, it looks like Figueroa has recovered from injury, news that will cause Erik Edman to breathe a sigh of relief and Aaron Lennon to curse under his breath. Caldwell wise, Wigan will be without Gary but may give a debut to Steven. The referee will be Phil Dowd.

Wigan will feel that they have something to prove after last season and all being well, they’ll still be feeling that after the game.
