MF looks back on Spurs 3-0 Bolton

Gareth Bale - Spurs News

As they say, you can only beat what’s put in front of you and when comedy ref Stuart Atwell made the somewhat surprising decision to reduce the spread that Bolton had laid out before us by one very key ingredient we weren’t about to complain. Eighteen minutes in, Gary Cahill was red carded after a cynical and late but not vicious challenge on Scott Parker near the halfway line after our skipper for the day had robbed him of possession.

The decision pretty much finished the game as a spectacle. We were already one up through Bale’s near post flick from a Modric corner and were dominant. How many goals and when were the only unknowns left, though there was the possibility that Owen Coyle’s head might actually explode as he raged at any official unwise enough to go within bawling distance of him.

Jaaskelainen’s body, reflexes and fingertips combined with our lads inability to aim for the corners to make sure that we were still only one up at the break. Kevin Davies won all the hoofs forward from the Bolton rear making sure that the ten men still achieved a reasonable amount of possession in our half though they weren’t able to do much with it.

Aaron Lennon scored the second after a wonderful break triggered by Walker’s reverse pass to Adebayor as we cleared a Bolton corner. After an hour Defoe added the third as Bale flicked on, again from a corner.

The players went through their party pieces but that was it. The answer to” how many?” ended being just three. As against Liverpool there were portions of the crowd getting upset towards the end that the players didn’t appear to be going for the jugular and attempting to rack up the goal difference as much as possible. Whilst things did go very flat in the last quarter of an hour or so, strangely coinciding with the appearance of Van der Vaart from the bench in place of Lennon, I feel this is more to do with Spurs fans not being able to cope with things going quite as well as they are more than any fault with the players attitude. This is an amazing sequence of results we’re putting together and the side deserves non-stop praise.

The bald facts are that we’re lying third with ten wins out of eleven. But more important is the quality of some of the football we’ve been playing, the amount of chances we’re creating and the way we’ve coped with injuries in the last fortnight. In this game Modric, Bale and Lennon were outstanding, especially the Croatian.

The result of the run is a relentlessly positive & confident outlook from the team the moment they take the field. Expectations are high and in the recent games against the middling and lower teams in the table they have been met (with only Fulham giving us a real scare) but personally I’m looking forward to renewing our encounters with the teams around us at the top. Stoke away next week though, a place where we’ve won in the couple of seasons and other teams have also done so this season. Palacios, Crouchy and Woodgate will surely do the decent thing? COYS.
