MF’s Report: Burnley 4-2 Tottenham Hotspur

Turf Moor - Header

The party started well enough as all the old songs were brought out “My name is Nicola Berti…” plus a few new ones “Kaboul! Kaboul! Kaboul is on fire!”. Each player was serenaded and the lads stoked the revelry with a couple of top quality goals. Bale sidefooted home Lennon’s cutback after a couple of minutes and then on the half hour Modric followed up a couple of stepovers with a piledriver left foot strike over Jensen’s shoulder.

The stroll in the end of season sunshine all went horribly wrong from the 42nd minute onwards as Burnley proceeded to give us a bit of a lesson. They ran, tackled and passed with more enthusiasm, created space around our box and were ruthless in their finishing. Ben Alnwick’s second appearance in a Spurs shirt at Turf Moor turned out to be very similar to his first one. We hit the post and bar but were second best overall.

Oh well. In some ways it might help to have a bit of a kick back towards reality after the euphoria of the last few days, a reminder that the players need to do more than just turn up to get a result. Redknapp will have learnt something about a few of the players from this game.

Fourth place and seventy points is more than the majority of us would’ve dreamed of at the start of the season. It’s been nine months where the good moments have far outweighed the bad. Brace yourself now for three months of wacky transfer speculation, with pauses for Harry’s court case and the World Cup, before we come back in August and begin all over again. Blackpool away would be a nice way to start the season!
