“No surprise if Kane leaves” says former England defender

“He’s averaging more than a goal a game for club and country in 2017 and, aside from Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar, I don’t think there is anyone better. Every manager in the world would take Harry Kane for their team these days and it would be no surprise to me if the likes of Real Madrid or Barcelona tried to prise him from Tottenham” so says former England and Glasgow Rangers defender Trevor Steven.

The former England man, writing for London newspaper CITY AM, thinks Kane is head and shoulders above all other England players, further demonstrating that with goals against Lithuania and Slovenia.

Steven believes International football seems to bring out the best in Kane, which Steven sees as another “tell-tale sign” that Kane is a top-class player.

He says a lot of it about confidence and that Kane’s is at all-time high, one of the biggest asset to have. He reckons Harry has no doubt about his ability having proven it to himself during the past two seasons.

The former Rangers defender says what sets Kane apart from a lot of other players is that inner drive and focus that he has, that he sees nothing other than match days and training that, unlike Sergio Aguero, you won’t see him at a concert in Amsterdam on a Thursday and he seems so focused on making his career as good as it can be

Steven believes Kane is perhaps the most complete England striker since Alan Shearer and while they are similar, he thinks Kane is a tidier player with a better touch, that he has so much variety to his game – he leads the line, scores with his right foot, left foot and head, has strength and composure, reads the game, links play, takes free-kicks – and all to an impressive level.

He also thinks of Kane as “irreplaceable” for England, and that’s the Walthamstow born star has learned a lot by playing with Christian Eriksen. He said “I think Kane has learned a lot from playing with Christian Eriksen at Spurs. It’s a shame that England don’t have a midfielder on Eriksen’s wavelength because he has brought out other features of Kane’s game. The Dane has also improved year on year”

Steven, who also played with Everton, thinks the only way Kane can actually improve further is to to play like he is for the entire campaign. Steven continued “All No9s go through barren spells but when he does he seems to come back with another hatful of goals. He appears to be so focused that I can’t see droughts being an issue for him.”

Steven won’t question what Kane’s ambitions are, expecting that he’d love to win the Premier League and Champions League with Tottenham, he does however think if Spurs don’t win a trophy this season Kane may start to wonder about his future and Steven can only see him giving it until the end of 2018-19.

He reckons Kane has the technique and ability to compete at the top, that he will want the medals and titles like Gareth Bale, who has won Europe’s top competition twice since leaving Spurs for Real.

So again another one who, despite Kane saying to the contrary on several occasions, thinks Harry might be off. I guess this is one of the pitfalls of having one of the best in World football knocking them in for fun at Tottenham. I sincerely hope he stays, and who knows he could fulfil his ambitions at Spurs. Stranger things have happened.
