Adebayor: Only Kane can save us

Emmanuel Adebayor thinks Harry Kane is the only man who can save Tottenham’s season – but he is ready to do his best too after declaring he is over a “dark moment” in his career.

Adebayor made his first Premier League appearance in almost two months on Sunday when he came off the bench for an 11-minute cameo in Spurs’ 3-0 defeat to Manchester United.

The striker has endured a torrid year which has involved poor performances, a spell of compassionate leave and a falling out with Tottenham’s fans.

Spurs have not missed him too much, thanks mainly to the form of Kane, who has scored 26 goals in his breakthrough year with the first team.

Adebayor has been impressed by Kane’s form and thinks the 21-year-old is the sole person who can help the team bridge the six-point gap that now separates Spurs and fourth-placed United.

“It’s quite hard sitting on the sidelines but I’m very happy and pleased for Harry Kane, who has been doing fantastic,” said the striker, who has scored two goals in 16 appearances.

“I think he is the only one that can save our season, like I did the last season. Two years ago, it was Gareth Bale.

“He (Kane) is learning through his difficult moment as well but he is fantastic player.

“If he keeps scoring two goals every weekend, he can save us.

“We all have a huge faith and believe in him. Hopefully, he will drag us out of the top seven and put us in the top four.”

Adebayor’s has endured plenty of scrapes in his career, but even by his standards, this has been a tough year for the 31-year-old.

The Togolese started the season as Mauricio Pochettino’s first-choice striker, but he soon dropped out of the team after a dip in form and he then angered Spurs fans by complaining about them booing the team,

The former Arsenal man then flew to Ghana on a period of compassionate leave in December.

Upon his return, he was the subject of deadline-day interest from QPR and West Ham, but despite some 11th-hour bargaining, he stayed at White Hart Lane.

Adebayor is ready to put all that behind him though and give his all for the club.

“I went through a little bit of a dark moment in my career but now I am back training hard and that’s it,” he said.

“A lot of things went wrong. We are all human beings. We all go through a lot at certain time of our lives.

“I think I have learned from it. I went through a lot of family issues.

“Now it is behind me and I am back on the football pitch. I am very glad to be back.

“I am available. I’m not 21 years old any more. I am 31 and I look at things differently.

“I just have to help my team and show respect for them and show respect for the club.”

Adebayor refused to reveal the exact details of what went on in the final day of the transfer window, and would not say whether he would remain at the club beyond the end of the season.

He said: “The summer is a long way to go. We’ve got what, nine games to go? That is almost two months. So we’ve got plenty of time.

“At the beginning of the last season, everyone wanted me out; at the end of the season, they wanted me to stay.

“I just have to keep believing in myself.

“And for me, sitting on the bench, as a player, I have been there before. I just have to work hard on the pitch and come back and play football.

“Today, you are zero. Tomorrow, you are a hero.”

Adebayor also moved to try to heal the rift that was created between him and the Spurs support in November when he said the team was “finding it hard in the head” to play at White Hart Lane while the fans were booing.

“Maybe sometimes, whenever I speak, obviously it’s misunderstood and people take it the wrong way,” he said.

“I don’t know if I have been punished or not but what I know is, I’m me, I’m being me, and whatever something is strong, if I have to say it and correct the thing, correct the future for the club, I will do it.

“Somebody will say something that people will misunderstand and take the wrong way but I have nothing against the fans, I always love the fans.”
