Alderweireld speaks on Spurs future

I’ve become frustrated in recent weeks in the amount of times I’ve had to publish ‘rumours’ from the press regarding Toby Alderweireld’s contract and future at Tottenham Hotspur.

Some of the red tops have in recent weeks and months claimed that the likes of Manchester City are preparing a £60million bid for the Belgian defender, while his agent has also been quoted in his homeland press as giving Spurs an ultimatum of give him a new contract or sell him.

Mauricio Pochettino also recently publicly stated that Alderweireld is happy at the club. The speculation is fuelled by the fact that he has two years left to run on his existing contract, with the option of a third year said to trigger the option of a £25million release clause.

Alderweireld however is instead leaving his contract situation to his father and agent as he prefers to focus on matters on the field with the aim of bringing trophies to Tottenham Hotspur.

There’s no doubt that behind the scenes the club are busy trying to agree a new deal with Toby, I would be hugely shocked if Daniel Levy, Mauricio Pochettino and co aren’t trying their upmost.

“I am trying to focus on the pitch, trying to help the team, give my quality on the field – that’s important and the rest will come,” he told talkSPORT in an exclusive interview.

“I have my father and my agent who are sorting out that kind of thing.

“Me, I am here to play football, to win things with Spurs and to give my best for the team.

“I did that from day one and I will do it now as well.”
