Davies: Bale inspired Tottenham move

Ben Davies has revealed that Gareth Bale’s history with Tottenham played a part in his decision to join the club.

Davies has joined Spurs from Swansea City after attracting interest from a number of other Premier League clubs including Liverpool, and he is excited about the transfer to White Hart Lane.

He knows Bale well from the international setup at Wales and recalls how fondly the Real Madrid player used to speak about the club, having spent six years there before making his record-breaking switch to Spain.

“Gareth always used to say what a good club Tottenham were and how they always looked after him,” Davies told the Sun on Sunday.

“That has always stuck with me and is one reason why I decided to make this move.

“People will want to compare me with Gareth but we are different types. He is a huge person to live up to, a superstar.”

Another factor in Davies’ decision to join Tottenham was his desire to work under Mauricio Pochettino, who earned rave reviews at Southampton last season.

“I liked what I saw of him at Southampton and the way he got them playing,” said the left-back.

“If the manager can get Tottenham working in a similar way we will be hard to beat, and with the talented players we have in attack it could be a perfect combination.”

While he has no regrets about coming to Tottenham, Davies says he felt sad to cut his ties with Swansea.

He added: “It was a huge wrench to leave, but I am certain I have made the right decision.”
