Dembele’s Vertonghen tribute

Mousa Dembele has spoken warmly to the club website about club and country team-mate and close friend Jan Vertonghen, after the centre back became Belgiums most capped player of all time in a recent World Cup qualifier against Cyprus.

Jan, who was Captain for the night, played his 97th game for the Red Devils and helped them keep a clean sheet in a 4-0 win over their Cypriot opponents in Brussels.

Winning that cap saw Jan surpass former striker Jan Ceulemans’ total of 96 caps, won between 1977 and 1991, and Mousa, who has been team-mates with Jan at Spurs since 2012 ,was overjoyed to see his good friend beat that long standing record.

Speaking to the club, Mousa said “If you look at him when he arrived at Spurs he was doing well but if you compare it to now, obviously he’s played a lot of games in the Premier League and this translates to playing in the national team as well,”
Dembele continued “People talk about the big names in the national team and he is one of them – he is one of the pillars that can’t fall down.

“It’s an unbelievable achievement. If you see all the times he’s played for Belgium, I can’t remember him having a bad game. He’s always very motivated to play for Belgium and he deserves this (praise). He sets an example, not only for the current group but for the future as well.”

So a glowing tribute for his friend from Mousa. He’s been a loyal servant to Tottenham and for me, of all the fine defenders we have, Jan is the most vital. He’s what makes us tick defensively. Agree with me? Let me know your thoughts.
