Kane can do it long term – Poch

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino believes Harry Kane’s biggest challenge will be to prove he is not a one-season wonder.

Kane has plundered some 30 goals during a stand-out campaign, which will finish with England Under-21s at the European Championship in the Czech Republic.

The 21-year-old, though, has scored only once in his past seven appearances, sparking some concerns over burn-out for the striker who was voted Professional Footballers’ Association Young Player of the Year.

Pochettino, however, is confident Kane, set to travel with Spurs on a whistle-stop post-season trip to Malaysia and Australia, can sustain his form through into 2015/2016.

“I think Harry’s challenge for next season is to try to score the same number of goals again – or more. We need to push him to try to do that,” the Argentinian said.

“He deserves this moment he is in and we are very happy with his season.

“Now he goes to the Euros and I hope he gets the trophy because I think it would be good for him.

“After that he can start his holidays, come back, and try to do it all again.”

Pochettino accepts it may be difficult for people outside Tottenham to see the club’s progress this season, but remains convinced they can continue to move forwards.

“This first season was not easy but we have been able to achieve some positive things and we can see the club is moving in the right way,” said the 43-year-old, who left Southampton last summer to take over at White Hart Lane following Tim Sherwood’s departure.

“The new philosophy of the team is there now and we need time to develop that now.”

Pochettino took Spurs into the Capital One Cup final at Wembley, where they were beaten by Chelsea.

He added: “I am very happy. It is a big club with potential.

“It is a good opportunity for us to do our job in good conditions with great facilities.

“Tottenham is a special club that deserves to do well and win trophies.”
