Well, welcome George-Kevin N’Koudou. It’s been a long time coming. As usual when it comes to the Transfer Window, Spurs fans fill up with hope about the possibilities of signing a big marquee player and that always seems to be extinguished by Levy’s tight pocket. The same again has happened this summer. A phrase we have heard swirl around our club is ‘signing potential’. Pochettino seems to have tackled the window in buying players with potential to get better; and that signifies a long-term job rather than an immediate impact.
That is exactly what N’Koudou brings to the table. He has been signed for the future but can be moulded into the squad as a player in the League Cup matches such as the game against Gillingham or as an injury replacement in the first team. Georges is a versatile winger and can play as the loan striker as he proved at Marseille. The 21 year old has bags of ability and pace which could be used as an asset during tight matches in the future.
Questions have been asked of N’jie who hardly featured last season and he has completed a loan the other way. It seems that N’Koudou has more potential and looks like a better and more versatile player. Put it into this context- it’s like upgrading a Nokia into a Samsung. It’s laughable, but it’s a mistake we all make!
Pochettino seems to always favour playing a system which involves playing one up-front and usually deploys three attacking midfielders behind the main striker. Against Liverpool, he played Kane up top, and Eriksen, Lamela and Dele sat behind the marksman. That did change when Walker had to be substituted- meaning we almost played a 4-4-2 with Janssen and Kane partnering each other. It’d be interesting where N’Koudou will be plotted considering the narrow set-up we play. He could slot wide of the striker(s) providing an extra man in attacking positions, similar to the job of Lamela.
It has been a relatively low cost transfer window- which is understandable due to the new stadium being developed. Forget about price, deep pockets and our chairman- I just think we have played the right cards and we are now a force to reckon with. Eric Dier today underlined the distraction of the window during the season, but our slow start can now be put behind us with the window finally slammed closed tonight.
