PLAYER RATINGS: Besiktas 1-0 Tottenham Hotspur

Michel Vorm – Tottenham’s back-up keeper was decent on the night. Some could argue that he could have done something to block Cenk Tosun’s goal.

Kyle Walker – Right-back’s return to football was an encouraging one as he tried to exploit spaces in front of him with his pace and was decent at the back as well.

Danny Rose – He attacked for most parts of the game rather than defend so he was a bit more comfortable. However, he couldn’t create anything and his crossing wasn’t great. He had a bit of trouble containing Gokhan Tore but that was due to his overloading to find a goal.

Younes Kaboul – Our captain once again let us down by getting caught napping for Besiktas’ goal. He was rarely tested but when he was, he was never calm and composed.

Vlad Chiriches – Shockingly, the Romanian was the better centre-back tonight but he almost got punished for playing with the ball unnecessarily in his own box in the opening minutes. He got better as the game went on and he made some good tackles and interceptions.

Benjamin Stambouli – Really solid game from the Frenchman as he was decent defending in front of his back line. He also passed the ball rather well and got his team going.

Paulinho – He was a no show today as he couldn’t get into the game at all. He tried to deliver some key passes to Soldado and the wingers but failed on almost all of them.

Mousa Dembele – He showed his skills in the attacking third and carried the ball really well when he was asked to deliver. However, his shots were poor and weak and he couldn’t test Zengin in the Besiktas goal.

Nacer Chadli – As always, the Belgian tried to do too much rather than playing the simple game as he squandered chances trying to beat his man. He delivered a good first time cross to Soldado in the opening minutes then disappeared later in the game.

Andros Townsend – He was sloppy in possession and unconvincing with his crosses. He passed the ball to the opposition far too many times on the night but his injury might be the cause of his bad play.

Roberto Soldado – The Spaniard picked up right where left off against Palace as he missed chances left and right. He couldn’t reach Chadli’s cross, missed a great chance when the keeper was out of his goal, couldn’t connect with the ball from six yards out, and fired wide from a knock-down off a corner kick. Another torrid game for the striker.

Subs

Erik Lamela – Came on for Soldado but failed to make an impact or impress. He tried the fancy flicks and passes to open up the defence but they did not work at all.

Aaron Lennon – Came on for Paulinho but couldn’t get into the game. He failed to put the ball in the right places with his crosses and did not attack the Besiktas defence enough.

Etienne Capoue – Came on for Walker with 15 minutes to go but did nothing to mention.
