PLAYER RATINGS: Tottenham 3-2 Southampton

Hugo Lloris – Left with little chance with the two 1-on-1s – although a keeper of his quality should be doing more than simply providing a stationary target for the forward to finish either side of – but made a cracking stop from a powerful Lallana drive which would have compounded Tottenham’s misery.

Kyle Naughton – Had a horror show. He’ll recover from it. Littered with mistakes, a couple major and a couple minor.

Younes Kaboul – Dominant in the air and polished on the ground, he’s playing his way into a new contract and the permanent captaincy.

Jan Vertonghen – A tidy display with nothing of particular note that can be mentioned.

Danny Rose – Competent in defence and very tidy on the ball in attack: a good performance from the oft-criticised Rose.

Aaron Lennon – The spark has gone from Lennon’s play this season and today was another second-rate performance, covered up somewhat by the mastery of Soldado and Eriksen.

Mousa Dembele – A mediocre, anonymous first half performance from Dembele – who, knowing him, was probably carrying an injury – and deservedly subbed off.

Nabil Bentaleb – Tidy as ever, almost found the corner with a powerful drive from 25 yards at 0-2. A solid performance.

Nacer Chadli – It cannot be denied that Chadli is very much growing into this season at Spurs and has been one of the most improved players of recent weeks. Powerful and polished today, tested Boruc with a firm strike.

Christian Eriksen – Simply exquisite. Every time he picked up the ball in the centre of the pitch he looked dangerous, and he got himself into the right place at the right time for both his goals, which were taken assuredly. Could have had one or two more and ran the Tottenham offensive show today.

Roberto Soldado – Almost as good as Eriksen, but lacking the goals. His skills, flicks and touches were a joy to behold and he showed great willingness and determination to set up the equaliser. His reaction to Sigurdsson’s late winner exemplifies just how much he loves the club, and it is great for the fans to see that.

Substitutes

Gylfi Sigurdsson – Completely changed the dynamic of the game when he entered the fray after half time, energising our attacks, and of course the Iceman provided the sumptuous finish that sealed the points in the 93rd minute. This lad can strike a football.

Andros Townsend – Almost as ineffective as the player he replaced (Lennon). Little end product, had one chance to score deep into injury time but missed the opportunity.
