Harry Redknapp has issued concerns about the fitness of Jonathan Woodgate again, with the next month proving to be critical for his future.

Woodgate only made three appearances last season for Spurs after suffering with a groin problem and will miss Tottenham’s pre-season tour of the USA to continue his own personal fitness programme.

A new Premier League ruling means that teams can only name a 25-man squad, so Woodgate’s fitness could count against him, with Michael Dawson, Ledley King, Younes Kaboul and Sebastien Bassong all providing competition.

“It’s make or break for Jonathan now,” Redknapp said.

“He has got to come back and play. If he is not ready for the start of the season it will be difficult for him.

“When he gets his boots on and starts playing, hopefully he will be alright.

“He is a fantastic player, one of the best centre-halves around. We just take it day by day with him and see how he progresses.”
