Spurs and Chelsea miss out on winger

Tottenham Hotspur appear to have missed out on one of their main transfer targets this summer.  Reports in France claim that Antoine Griezmann has agreed to join Atletico Madrid, after the La Liga champions met the £24million buy-out clause in his contract.

The Real Sociedad winger has also been linked with a move to Chelsea, but it looks as if the player will be remaining in Spain with only personal terms left to be agreed.  There is no doubt that Griezmann would have made for a great addition to the Tottenham ranks, but frustratingly it’s another case of a ‘nearly’ signing which we have all become so used to over the past dozen or so transfer windows.

With less than a month until the new Premier League campaign kicks-off, Franco Baldini and co need to be working around the clock to bring in some key signings.  Notably in my opinion a new centre-half and a proven striker.

Atletico boss Diego Simeone is excited at the prospect of the Frenchman joining his club.

‘He’s a brilliant player,’ said Simeone , speaking to reporters before Atletico’s friendly against San Jose Earthquakes. ‘He is very quick and can give us a lot of options in attack.

‘However, it’s also true that a lot of other players have been talked about as possibly coming [to Atletico], and we could make two teams out of all of them.’

Griezmann made 201 appearances during five years at Sociedad, scoring an impressive 52 times.
