How the Spurs players rated vs Arsenal

Why is it that Tottenham so often inspire the top teams to give their best performances? They certainly did today and Arsenal were excellent. Spurs fought hard to stay in it but were, honestly, struggling, second best.

Lloris – 6

No option but to be a spectator for Arsenal’s first brilliant headed goal. Was unbalanced during the second and so didn’t assert his presence as he should perhaps have done. Second half he did assert his presence on a number of occasions and looked good.

Vertonghen – 5

One of Tottenham’s outstanding players this season, this was his least convincing show, some mistakes and too many rather desperate clearances or hopeful long balls.

Dier – 5

Dier is brilliant as the defensive mid in front of a back two. In front of three, he’s a luxury when a more progressive player is required. The question: can he make the middle centre back? On this evidence, no. Didn’t command the space, make the decisive movement in key plays, for instance in the two first half goals.

Sanchez – 6

So unfortunate when his good defending was determined the foul that led to the first goal. The best of the central defenders.

Trippier – 6

Trips played well but was pressed back by Sanchez and couldn’t get forward in support.

Davies – 7

He should have always been picked ahead of Rose (but Rose’s complete absence doesn’t bode well). He was consistently available on the left and one of Spur’s best attacking outlets.

Dembele – 6

His usual powerful presence. His now customary early departure.

Sissoko – 6

In an undistinguished Spurs performance, far from the worst performer. Always a willing runner.

Eriksen – 7

Didn’t influence this game in the end but one of the few players who looked to have the class to do so. Several attempts, hit the post.

Dele – 5

Is he doomed to be one of those players who, when he doesn’t light up a game, looks peripheral? Can look like a talented youngster brought in to play in the men’s team.

Kane – 6

Still powerful, still a threat but just not quite on it. Strapped up and not quite making the runs as he normally would.

Subs

Winks (7] was so tidy when he came on. Looks like he could sit at the base of this team and make it tick.

Llorente (6) finally given his opportunity to lay off a chance (for Son) with his head.

Son (6) fluffed his lines with that chance but looked busy.
