It seems we’ve entered the final countdown to the World Cup in Brazil. There are less than 80 days until the hosts take on Croatia in the opening fixture, and for those Spurs stars hoping to book their seat on the flight to Rio, impressing in the remaining Premier League fixtures is all they can do.
Which would be handy. Tim Sherwood’s men have had more than a topsy-turvy campaign so far, but some impressive displays from these hopefuls could still catapult the Lilywhites back into the European positions.
Kyle Walker
The 23-year-old right-back has been a regular in the England squad since Roy Hodgson took over, but an impressive season from Glen Johnson means competition for a start is hotting up. It’s likely Walker will make the squad, his blistering pace will be a huge asset in the searing heat, but after missing out on the Denmark friendly through injury, he’ll be determined to show why he should be a starter this summer. It’s recently been reported that he’s taking pain killing injections to overcome he’s niggles.
Andros Townsend
Another player who has impressed for the Three Lions is Andros Townsend, but after a spell on the sidelines with a hamstring injury he has skirted onto the periphery with both Raheem Sterling and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain claiming their stake in the side.
Townsend however has some electric performances in his nation’s colours under his belt so will be a favourite to make the trip, especially with England fans.
Paulinho
It could be a busy summer for the Brazilian international. The 25-year-old midfielder has been linked with a move away from White Hart Lane, with the World Cup being the ultimate shop window. The former Corinthians man has 25 caps to his name and featured heavily in the 2013 Confederations Cup, going on to win the Bronze Ball.
Roberto Soldado
The Spanish striker has found an affinity with Spurs fans despite having only lit up the Premier League in small doses this season. He has an undeniable talent, 59 goals in 101 appearances for Valencia proves that, but a baron spell in front of goal could see him miss out on Vincent Del Bosque’s squad.
Jan Vertonghen
Jan Vertonghen has been an ever-present in the Belgian side since 2009 and is likely to be a major part of the Red Devils defence again this summer. The European side are seen as somewhat dark horses for the World Cup and could be worth backing to make the latter stages of the tournament with free bets. The back four will be one of the most solid in Brazil with the Premier League’s Thomas Vermaelen, Vincent Kompany, and the Spurs man all expected to play key roles.
