Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes has been named in Brazil’s 23-man squad for the World Cup.

Rather than pick a provisional squad, Brazil coach Carlos Dunga has decided to name seven stand-bys, with Spurs newcomer Sandro being one of the reserves.

Gomes is the only player in the squad currently playing in England.   ORonaldinho and one-time Spurs target Adriano have both been left out of the final 23.

Brazil squad: Goalkeepers: Julio Cesar (Inter Milan), Doni (AS Roma), Gomes (Tottenham Hotspur)

Defenders: Maicon (Inter Milan), Daniel Alves (Barcelona), Michel Bastos (Olympique Lyon), Gilberto (Cruzeiro), Lucio (Inter Milan), Juan (AS Roma), Luisao (Benfica), Thiago Silva (AC Milan)

Midfielders: Gilberto Silva (Panathinaikos), Felipe Melo (Fiorentina), Ramires (Benfica), Elano (Galatasaray), Kaka (Real Madrid), Julio Baptista (Roma), Kleberson (Flamengo), Josue (VfL Wolfsburg).

Forwards: Robinho (Santos), Luis Fabiano (Sevilla), Nilmar (Villarreal), Grafite (VfL Wolfsburg).

    I see former Spurs "star" Gilberto is in the squad. How? Let's hope Lennon gets to play against him at some point in the tournament. It would be hilarious….

          at first i didnt see our former gilberto on the squad but i did see the former arsenal one which explains the confusion .. sorry about that .. brazilians give every random players nicknames but when it comes to gilbertos their names stay the same haha

    To answer your question the former Arsenal player is Gilberto Silva (born 1976) who is not to be confused with Gilberto da Silva Melo (born 1976) who used to play for us.

    To avoid confusion he's popularly known as 'Gilberto', while Gilberto Galdino dos Santos (born 1976) is known as 'Beto' to make a distinction.

    He shouldn't be confused with Gilberto dos Santos (born 1976) who was born in Brazil but is now a 'naturalized' Lebanese citizen. One presumes that he realised that he was never going to make a name for himself as Gilberto if he stayed in Brazil.

    Of course none of the above should be confused with Gilberto Alves, who was born in 1950, but made his debut in 1976. Presumably he had at least 4 admirers who subsequently named their new-borns after him.

    Now you know why the Brazilians give their players nicknames!
