Up for The Cups

Even though it may have felt like the world was going to end after a demoralising defeat to Liverpool, it didn’t and it is time to shake off the disappointment and get up for the cups!

A run of three cup games in a row provides a welcome distraction from the trials of the Premier league. Mo Po finds himself in a unique situation for the modern day Premier League manager, where wholesale changes are not necessary and these games can provide a platform for some of our players to re-kindle their form.

The first test is a short trip across the channel to Belgium to face KAA Gent, who are having their own domestic problems this season, and find themselves marooned in mid table. Gent’s last fixture ended in a home defeat to AS Eupen, a side that hadn’t won in its previous 6 games and are languishing near the bottom of the table.

This game may feel like a home away from home for our Belgian superstars, Toby Alderweireld, Mousa Dembele and maybe a trip back to the continent could see our misfiring Dutchman Vincent Janssen spring back into life? The Belgian Jupilar league being very similar to the Eredivisie, Gent could be the perfect opposition for Janssen to re-discover the shooting boots he left in neighbouring Holland, where he scored 21 of his 27 league goals after the Christmas break. Now in mid-February just “trying hard” isn’t enough for the man Spurs shelled £18mil on in the summer and maybe, just maybe bagging one in Belgium will be the shot in arm his Spurs career desperately needs.

However, it would not be too much of a surprise to see Harry Kane and Co start in Belgium, in an attempt to put the tie beyond the hosts before the return leg at Wembley.

On Sunday, we visit Craven Cottage in the FA cup for the first time since our 4-0 drubbing in 2011. Fulham will be no pushovers and have been very strong at home of late, scoring a total of 10 goals in the last three home fixtures. 16-year-old wonder kid Ryan Sessegnon will be one to keep your eye on, impressing with his adventurous wing-play recently, scoring in the previous round against Hull.

It will be interesting to see Poch’s reaction in terms of team selection for the cups, a need to create a winning mentality has been stressed by Mo Po himself and captain Hugo Lloris. Nothing will create that mentality like lifting a trophy draped in lilywhite and blue ribbons.

My eyes have seen and are desperate to see the glory of the cups once again! COYS!
