One of the most popular petitions for Levy during this winter window was the need to buy a senior striker. But, do we really need one? Can we cope the goal need with the attacking midfielders we had plus Lewis Holtby, the only senior buy we made in January?

Let’s recap and look back in time a little bit: In 2008 our options in the final third were aplenty: Defoe, Bent, Roman Pavlyuchenko, dos Santos, even though we sold Berbatov to United, a player who spent the last drop of his best form at Old Trafford. Besides, it wasn’t our best season.

One year later, 2009, we recruit one of Redknapp’s favourite strikers: Peter Crouch, and we had on loan a veteran like Gudjohnssen plus Robbie Keane. We ended 4th by 2010, one of the best seasons since the start of the Premier League.

The 2010-11 season saw us breaking the market with the arrival of Rafael van der Vaart, the first of a number of attacking midfielders who can also play up top. It was a good season for us, going pretty far in the Champions League. However our striking options did not change.

Then in 2011, with Keane going to the U.S.A we bring Emmanuel Adebayor (who was our top goalscorer) and ex – united Louis Saha.

And, as we know, in 2012 Saha was released, and we acquired plenty of attacking midfielders like Sigurdsson, Dempsey, Dembele and Holtby during the winter window – leaving the senior striker squad to Defoe and Ade, and the youngsters Coulibaly and Kane.

With half of the campaign under our belt, playing most of the games with one striker (due to Adebayor playing for Togo in ANC or injuries of Defoe) or even worse, with Dempsey playing as a striker, I wonder, were we lucky?

I’m pretty sure that most of Premier League sides wouldn’t be fighting for a Champions League position if they had to play most of the games with one striker, but also I cant stop thinking where we would be if we could rotate in that position and have more options.

I think we agree that the team have an excellent midfield, we create chances and we give balance to the defensive side, but its clear we have many difficulties going forward. We always end on the opposite area, playing side to side without a clear idea or depending on luck (or Gareth Bale).

Villas -Boas is not an idiot, and I’m sure he knows the need of a senior striker. Doesn’t matter if its Gary Hooper or Leandro Damiao or somebody else, that signing is what we need to improve and keep us consistently in the top four
