As Mismatched as Kane’s Boots

Three in the back does, work. The monstrosity that was Spurs’ attack tonight did not. It matters little that the Gooners gave away three points at home or that Chelsea (as of this writing—still five minutes to play) failed to wrap up the league—this was the type of disappointment we have grown too familiar with through recent years and probably signifies an end to our title ambitions.

Because you see when a side like Sunderland basically says “we aren’t trying to score or for the win—see if you can beat us”—which they did for the entire second half—it is incumbent on a truly class team to go ahead and do just that. Kind of makes you wish they had all played vs Wycombe—couldn’t have been much worse, could it?

As for the specifics, Kyle simply had no ideas; Sissoko continued to be wasteful in his cameo; Davies lacked Rose’s pace upon his entry; Kane was taken out of the game by the Mackem defence; Eriksen and Dele showed a flash or two but nothing incisive; Wanyama simply can’t deliver the type of playmaking somebody in his position must. But the real culprit for much of the game was Son—I counted at least a half-dozen chances for him to beat his man around the left; find a teammate in space in the box; launch a hard shot at Mannone—something, anything. He wasn’t up to it. Credit to Sunderland—they executed the proper game plan. This was a failure of fairly high magnitude.

The point is worth just that—a point. The rest of the 90 minutes were pointless…
