Monkey Off Our Back

The time has finally come! Still giddy with excitement from Sunday, the taste of the words “Tottenham will finish above Arsenal” remain ever so sweet to utter. 22 years of hurt finally expelled in the most poetic fashion by beating the old enemy to confirm that St. Whatever makes you feel better about your franchise club is officially cancelled.

Perhaps the most satisfying thing about the victory is the ease at which it came, the nervous energy in the terraces juxtaposed by a mature and routine looking victory on the pitch. It has been a very long time since an Arsenal team showed up at White Hart Lane and were completely outclassed and outfought. The cavernous 14-point gap was clear for all to see, Arsenal bereft of ideas, Spurs silky and stylish. A class above.

2-0 flattered Arsenal, if it wasn’t for some wayward finishing in the first half and some brilliant goalkeeping by Petr Cech in the second, the score line would have looked a lot worse for Wenger’s boys.
The second goal epitomises the game, moments after the first goal, Wanyama hard into the tackle, Arsenal sloppy in possession a frantic attempt of a tackle by Gabriel and the game is over. The omission of Dembele from the starting 11 would have been a cause for concern for many Spurs fans. However, Victor Wanyama put in another imperious display, he has been a revelation this season and can be looked at as one of the signings of the summer at 11 million pounds. 24 million pounds cheaper than his opposite number Granit Xhaka.

Arsenal fans may try and tell you that “It doesn’t even matter to us” or “What trophy do you get? “ Well you can’t invent a day then deny it when it doesn’t go your way, they are hurting and we can finally enjoy it. We may not win the title this year but we can rejoice in the fact that we are everything they are not. The monkey is off our backs….the monkey is dead.
