Right wing transfer policy

How many times did we fail to adequately cope with the absence of Aaron Lennon last season? Well given that we played 53 games and the tramlined speedster started just 26 of them I’d say it was on about 27 occasions. With Bale and Lennon storming down the flanks we were at our best, without one or both we became lopsided as various square pegs were forced into round holes and shoved out wide.

Despite the battering that Bale receives almost every game, Lennon misses far more matches as his delicate hamstrings and groin often fail to keep up with his scampering and sudden changes of direction. His influence on most games was often subtle, his individual possession stats are rarely outstanding, what he does with that possession is often crucial though. With Lennon starting we won 62% of our games last season as opposed to 44% without him, (stats courtesy of soccerbase.com).

The transfer priority must be to beef up a ridiculously puny forward line. With a little over three weeks to go before we kick off at the Sports Direct Arena we have only Jermain Defoe and Harry Kane to rely on. Personally I think a new keeper and some decent cover for Benny at left back are also vital but it’s on the right where huge concern lies and the sooner we get someone in and move David Bentley back down the batting order, the better.
