Spurs v Man City: Key Player Battles

The Lilywhites entertain the Citizens at the Lane on Sunday in a match which could have huge implications for the race for the Champions League. Gareth Bale is reportedly facing an uphill battle to be fit for the crunch tie; but Spurs will tell you that there are tens of other players in the squad that can make a huge difference. However, City also have a number of impact players.

Aguero and Tevez v Dawson and Vertonghen

This is possibly the worst time to play City in this season; wins over Chelsea and Manchester United were impressive and the Argentinean strike pair contributed greatly to these. Whilst the Sky Blues have had an admittedly disappointing season, their strikers still pose a threat and the Tottenham centre back pairing will have their work cut out. However, if they defend like they did against Arsenal in the North London Derby at the Lane, then City could well be denied.  Aguero hobbled off against Wigan with a hamstring strain, so it remains to be seen if he will be fit.

Yaya Toure v Mousa Dembele and Scott Parker

Ivorian midfield powerhouse Toure is the king of driving runs and the Spurs midfield partnership will have to be firmly on their guard to stop him. With players like Silva and the aforementioned strikers ready to pick up on a Toure pass, it is vital that Dembele and Parker nullify his effectiveness. It is also crucial that Dembele attacks Toure – with potentially Bale missing, the game could be won by a long shot from the Belgian.

Lennon v Clichy

The Lilywhites have been sorely suffering from a lack of width in their last few games without their speedy winger and he will be pivotal in adding the attacking intensity to Tottenham’s attacks. Clichy is known for his marauding runs up the pitch; the pacy Englishman will be looking to capitalise upon the open space he may well find in the City left-back position. Also, Spurs have never lost when Lennon has scored; he will be desperate to get his name on the scoresheet once more.

This is one of the hardest matches in any teams’ season; but it is crucial that Spurs get a positive result. There is no place for respect for City; our best bet is to attack them out of the game. They looked unconvincing against Wigan, and Spurs will fancy their chances.
