A look back at Leicester

And it’s good bye to Leicester

A more comfortable win than most would’ve predicted which when added to the bonus of it being our last meeting of the season with those pesky Foxes made it a very good night out. Four meetings, two draws, one loss and a victory against them in total. We win on goal difference! Yeah baby!

Given that we had to play to win the game, we expended as little energy as could’ve been expected in getting through to the next stage against such a team of workaholics. We also had the benefit of seeing Son and Bentaleb play themselves into a bit of form whilst at the same time striking a blow for football lovers everywhere.

And good bye to him

Ranieri’s submissive, negative and unambitious selection and approach was evident from the off. We took the game to Leicester whilst they relied as ever on breakaways but given that Claudio hadn’t picked any of the attacking players likely to take advantage of that sort of tactic, we were always in the driver’s seat.

Some fancy passing from Carroll and Eriksen, good movement from Son, quick interventions from Bentaleb and good use of the full backs as wingers contributed to us pushing the home team back but as ever the lack of a cutting edge when we’re without Kane proved to be an issue. That is until the intervention of a transformed Son Heung-Min.

Since returning from injury his form has been pretty woeful but he’d been lively all game and after 39 minutes when given a bit of space by Carroll’s first time ball (his instant angled passing is his biggest asset) he made the most of it by shifting the stupidly pink blob away from Chilwell and unleashing a drive over Schmeichel’s left shoulder.

Now it was a question of holding on against the inevitable Leicester fight back….except there wasn’t one.

Or maybe not

They changed their team after half time and tried to be more progressive but we were barely troubled and always looked like the team most likely to score next especially after Kane was brought on to take advantage of the holes appearing in the home team’s defence. It was Chadli who gave us the two goal cushion, finishing well (cynics might say it’s the only thing he does well) after an absolutely world class through ball from Son, one that would have the Ozil lovers in the media creaming themselves if he’d done it.

Leicester redoubled their efforts after that but the home town fans got no reward and will be disappointed with their team’s performance and hopefully with the manager’s attitude as well. Does he think they’re a good side or not? If he does, why not try and get to Wembley? Only two league defeats all season after all and if you don’t lose, you win the cup.

A couple more mentions, Pochettino’s substitutions were (for once) well timed and contributed to the ease with which we made it through the second half, Kevin Wimmer once again looked decent and someone we can trust when the day eventually comes for his league debut and Michel Vorm had a good outing showing safe hands and palming one of the few Leicester shots on target away from danger nicely.
