Colchester 1 Spurs 4 – Match report

And relax

Comfortable from the off might be slightly overstating it, another goal before half time would’ve silenced a few of the yeah-but-what-if’s going on at the back of the mind whilst we were only one ahead, but it was a good and painless (if you weren’t a Colchester centre back) win.

Ouch.

Poch’s weakened but still strong line-up was given a boost in the first few minutes when two home defenders bumped heads painfully and both had to be replaced. There was more space than we’re used to and we pushed them back and created opportunities but didn’t score. Our possession started to get getting sloppy so we scored at a good time – Chadli was found in space on the right and fired a beauty of strike across the keeper and just inside the far post from twenty odd yards.

Cue sighs of relief.

Things carried on as before after the goal but we were still only one ahead at the break. Colchester came more into the game in the second half so Dier’s deflected shot for goal number two was more than welcome.

The not so Marvellous Marvin

There was still plenty of the game left though and the introduction of Sordell (and blimey he’s dropped through the divisions like a stone) gave the home side more of a threat. He hit the post after Dier was caught with the ball but then Chadli finally got his head on the end of one of the many excellent crosses Trippier had been putting in all afternoon and all doubts were removed even after Davies was unfortunate in registering an o.g. against his name.

The fat lady

Goal machine Tom Carroll finished from close in to wrap things up and put us in the hat for round 5.

A fine and professional display that enabled a few of the players to have a rest though it’s a shame that Kane and Dier weren’t amongst them.

Next up

Back to the league on Tuesday and another away trip, this time to Carrow Rd.
