Swansea this weekend, 4pm on Sunday but not on the telly!
Leaguewise things look a lot healthier than a fortnight ago. Two home wins have taken us up to 6th, one off ‘our’ league position, or the one it’s widely thought is our ceiling this season. Having played the vast majority of our games against teams in the top half of the table our visit to Wales just fails to continue that trend. Swansea lie 11th, which is a bit of a surprise given their good start to the season. A draw at Chelsea and a win over Man Utd in their first four games had people falling over themselves to praise Gary Monk, one point from their last three against Watford, Everton and Southampton means that it’s all gone a bit quiet.
Bafetemi Gomis is the main danger man for the Swans though Ayew has also done well. In midfield Shelvey and Cork against Dier and Alli will be a good contest, assuming Alli doesn’t get pushed further forward in the absence of Son. On the left Montero will aim to have Walker flailing his tattoos madly & angrily.
We’re picking up an injury a week it seems but not getting them back at the same rate. Dembélé, Pritchard, Bentaleb, Mason, Son and now Rose are all more likely to be watching than trying to help us continue our good run. The loss of both Mason and Son is annoying of course as it denies us both workrate and goals. The idea is though that the squad has a higher overall level of quality than last year of course (if not depth) so no reason why the players that step in shouldn’t do a job. Maybe Tom Carroll will provide an insight into how to get the wrong side of Williams and Fernandez; he was at the Liberty on loan last year of course.
Swansea consider us a bogey team and if we play to our potential there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be dissuaded from that perception. Things are going Lamela’s way, Eriksen is back to fitness, Kane has scored and Dier is a goal machine. Combine all that with the best keeper in the league and the joint meanest defence and what can go wrong? Don’t answer that.
