Are Spurs set to raid Ajax again?

According to The Daily Mail Tottenham have reportedly identified Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt as a potential summer transfer target if and probably when Toby Alderweireld leaves the club.

The 18-year-old Dutch centre-back has impressed for club and country this season and the article says that De Ligt has emerged as a viable replacement for Alderweireld should the Belgian move on during the close season.

The article adds that Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid are interested in 29-year-old Alderweireld with the star defender and the club at an impasse over a new deal and there is a sense of inevitability that the Belgian is heading for the exit door.

He has yet to feature in a Premier League game since picking up an injury against Real Madrid, and with those contract talks stalling, the article says that De Ligt has emerged as one of a number of possible options.

It goes on to say that several other European sides are understood to be monitoring the teenager, who has captained Ajax at times this season and recently starred on international duty for Holland.

However his remarkable rise means he won’t come cheap and that an astronomical £50m fee may be necessary to prize away the elegant defender.

Spurs are no strangers in raising Ajax for their top players with Davinson Sanchez, Christian Eriksen and Jan Vertonghen all making the move from the Dutch capital to north London in recent seasons.
