Club announce defender’s new deal

We continue to wait and hope that Toby Alderweireld signs a new deal but one defender that has put pen to paper is Anton Walkes.

The club has announced via twitter that Walkes has signed a new deal keeping him with us until 2019.

He is currently on loan with MLS newcomers Atlanta United, playing 18 times this year and scoring twice.

It has been a very inconsistent season for the 20-year-old out in the states. Atlanta coach Gerardo Martino (yes he of Barcelona fame) has used Walkes mainly at right back, a position the young Lewisham born player is not quite at home in and indeed does have a lot to learn about. But he is getting the feel of regular first team action which can only serve him well both now and in the future.

Is this contract a significant step in the right direction for Anton and a possible shot at first team action? One suspects not, and perhaps this contract is a means to Tottenham getting a better fee from Atlanta or perhaps a team a bit closer to home. We will probably have to wait and see on that one.

There was, of course, no obligatory arm over the shoulder picture with Mauricio Pochettino that we have become accustomed to seeing recently but at the same time it’s a significant step for young Anton and perhaps fine reward for taking a risk by heading to the MLS so early in his career.

Congrats Anton and good luck!
