Contract Talks For Toby

According to The Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur may be set to finally begin contract negotiations with stalwart centre-back Toby Alderweireld.

Minor speculation began last month over the reliable Belgian’s future in North-London when it was pointed out that most of Tottenham’s key squad members had been tied down to new contracts, except for 28 year old defender Toby Alderweireld.

The defender, who picked up just one booking in the entirety of Spurs’ Premier League campaign last season, responded to the transfer talk, claiming that he had not signed a new contract simply because he had not yet been offered one.

Now it seems, Tottenham are ready to begin contract talks with the Belgian international, with rumours suggesting Toby could be see his wages doubled next season, as reported by The Mirror.

The report reveals that currently, Alderweireld earns close to £50,000 per week, a relatively small figure by today’s standards, especially considering Toby’s significance in the starting eleven.

It is reported that the 28 year old will seek to bag himself a weekly wage that more accurately reflects his importance in the team, which could see his earnings rise to match the likes of Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris, who’re both currently paid double Toby’s wages.

The centre-back still has two years left on his current contract and Tottenham do have the option to extend his stay to three years, however Spurs will want to remove the £25 million release clause that could see the defender leave in the future.
