Tottenham midfielder Mousa Dembele has been banned for six matches after accepting a Football Association charge of violent conduct.

Dembele appeared to claw his fingers down Diego Costa’s cheek during Spurs’ 2-2 draw at Chelsea on Monday night.

The Belgian had until 6pm on Thursday to respond but he did not contest the charge, head coach Mauricio Pochettino said on Friday afternoon.

And the full extent of Dembele’s sanction followed from the FA.

A statement from the FA read: “Mousa Dembele will serve a six-match suspension with immediate effect after he committed an act of violent conduct which was not seen by the match officials but caught on video.”

More to follow.

Have something to tell us about this article?

  1. It was clearly an act of threatening behaviour of an unacceptable type and he did push at least on the edge of the eye socket so should have been sanctioned,. However Costa's response tells us it wasn't a forceful eye gouge and it looked like Costa was pinching him as provocation. What I still struggle to accept is that the assistant ref did't see it – millions of people saw the Sky pictures of the assistant looking straight at the two of them – nobody in the way – and yet the FA (with no further explanation) simply say nothing was seen leaving them clear to apply whatever sanction they fancy. It makes me doubt their integrity

  2. The two lads on bans should be a shamed of them self for letting there team mates down the manager and the club, if they don't learn by the punishment received what chance have there team mates in Championship football
And can some one tell me what is the use of passing the ball back to a goalkeeper to play them self's in to trouble which I have seen so many times with this team in my eyes you just don't score goals going backward
