Is the future what we’re hoping for?

Sunday 18th August 2013 the day that Tottenham Hotspur started there first competitive game of the 2013/14 season in which so far we’ve won 9 drawn 1 and lost 2, scoring 23 goals & conceded 5. We had only conceded 2 goals in all competitions until Sunday in a game where we lost 0-3 to West Ham at White Hart Lane, a game which all Spurs fans would like to forget.

So the title of this article is ‘Is the future what we’re hoping for? All was going incredibly well for Tottenham Hotspur this season until the weekend in a game I can’t find any positives from, we didn’t play well at all, getting thumped 0-3 at home to West Ham, a team that hadn’t scored away from home all season and hadn’t won at the lane since 1999, but we need to get over this and see beyond this slip up, we currently sit in 6th place just 3 points off top spot so its still very early days of course, I’m hearing a lot of Spurs fans saying that’s it for our season, I couldn’t disagree more we suffered a very low standard of performance at the weekend that is all.

The next 3 games for Spurs are in our favour to get right back on track after this international break; we play Aston Villa away in the BPL on the 20th of this month, a game in which we are more than capable of winning, after this we play Sheriff away from home in the Europe League, then two games against Hull, a capital one cup game and then BPL game.

Looking at the bigger picture we sold a player and brought a team this season, a team in which is solid with big names. AVB is still trying to find his best squad I think that is why he is changing around a lot, the good thing this season is we have got the players to cope with rotation and we can afford to change. Our squad now is seriously impressive and surely we can only get better with game time and training as the players gel more and more. Although we do have depth in squad I do still feel we could do with signing another striker in the January transfer window I feel this is a must for us this season to progress even further, hopefully all our players will be back from injury sooner rather than later.

In my opinion there are a few players that have shone more than others this season so far, and my top two have to be Gylfi Sigurdsson & Danny Rose, I have been so impressed by these two, Danny has just been fantastic in that LB role, he bombs forward when needed and is a very tough defender, also we have seen he has a goal in him too, that loan spell and Sunderland last season really helped Rose out, he’s a top player now and we have missed him over the last couple of games. Gylfi Sigurdsson has just been awesome, I’ve always liked him as a player but felt he wasn’t quite showing his full potential last season but this season he’s on fire, he’s got a quality creative spark and links play very well as well as getting some pretty crucial goals too, I feel he will play a very large part in our season. Those two aside we have so much talent in the squad this season, Paulinho in midfield has looked like an absolute beast, another Brazilian midfield master, Townsend has been very promising so far this season due to his footwork and having very good acceleration, I just wish personally that he would cross the ball into the box more, as much as I have admiration for players who have a shot I also feel he does take the shot on far too often without using the players around him, a reason maybe Roberto Soldado hasn’t been scoring many goals is due to the lack of play to him from left and right. Christian Eriksen has been a revelation, he’s an extremely talented player and a forward thinker I believe he will unlock a lot of chances for us this season when defences look hard to crack down. Those are my main picks for the season so far, but there has been so many players making good movement and really looking sharp on the ball, it’s playing into AVB’s hands the fact he has so many good players trying to get a start every game.

What with all this talent in our wonderful team I find it hard to believe we won’t have a successful season, it is always going to be tough in the premier league but I feel with the squad and just as important the manager we are more than capable of managing one of those top 4 places to get the deserved champions league football next season, we are a top English football club that needs top flight European football. Personally I wait with serious enthusiasm about what we can achieve this season. Is it possible? Yes. Will it be hard? Yes. Are we capable? More than capable. I can’t wait to hear the official Champions League anthem ringing around White Hart Lane again…
