Vertonghen: Everyone knows I am not a left-back

Jan Vertonghen has hinted that he would prefer to concentrate on playing as a central defender.

The Tottenham player operated at left-back (and did so in impressive fashion) due to injuries to Kyle Naughton and Danny Rose, and of course Benoit Assou-Ekotto is on loan at Championship outfit QPR. Jan was voted Man of the Match for his performance at Goodison on Sunday, but wants to play in the heart of the Tottenham defence.

Left-footed Vertonghen sees himself as a central defender, and the vast majority of Spurs fans would agree with the Belgian. However, with nobody else there who can cover the position (apart from Fryers) what else are we supposed to do in these circumstances?

With the recent form of Vlad Chiriches and the return to fitness of Younes Kaboul. AVB will have plenty of tough decisions to make to choose his central defensive partnership of Michael Dawson, Younes Kaboul, Vlad Chiriches and of course, Jan Vertonghen.

Vertonghen told the Belgian media: “I can play at left-back and I can help the team at times.

“But everyone knows I am not a left-back. Once there are injuries I am the first to fill in the gap.

“Sometimes it’s better if you can play in only one position.

“These guys specialise in one position and they can completely concentrate.”
