Report: Jose Mourinho tried to sign £20m-rated Ledley King for Chelsea in 2004

A report has now revealed that Jose Mourinho wanted to bring Ledley King to Chelsea in 2004 but the club had their approach rejected by Spurs.

According to The Guardian, the Blues had a £20m approach for King rejected when Mourinho was in charge during his first stint at the club.

Chelsea quickly moved on to Ricardo Carvalho, signing him from Porto in a deal worth around £27m (Transfermarkt).

During that season, Mourinho had described King as ‘fantastic’ (Evening Standard) and King was also believed to be interested in discussing the approach from the Blues, as per the Daily Mirror.

However, Spurs offered King the club captaincy and moved him back from midfield into his favoured position of centre-back.

Almost two decades later, it seems as if Mourinho may finally have his man as King is rumoured to be on the verge of joining Spurs in a coaching role under the Portuguese manager (Sky Sports).

I am all for King joining the coaching team. He will more than likely join in a minor role, however, what a mentor he will be for the defenders and Japhet Tanganga in particular. King has a wealth of experience which he will no doubt pass on to the players.
