Overmars: “Spurs wanted Kluivert”

Ajax director of football Marc Overmars has told FOX Sports in the Netherlands that Tottenham Hotspur did want to sign Justin Kluivert as part of their move for Davinson Sanchez.

Kluivert is the son of former Ajax, Netherlands and Barcelona striker Patrick Kluivert and has had a terrific start to his career, with the pacy winger thriving in the Ajax first team since making the step up last season contributing 11 goals and five assists for the Amsterdam side this term.

He is expected to be in demand during this summer’s transfer market, and the youngster has now voiced his intentions to leave Ajax this summer. He told Dutch daily newspaper Volkskrant that he wants to leave Ajax, and noted that they even attempted to sell him to Tottenham Hotspur last season without telling him.

Ajax director of football Marc Overmars has now told FOX Sports about the situation, claiming that in talks with Spurs over the deal for Davinson Sanchez last summer, Tottenham did ask about Kluivert’s availability too.

Former Arsenal winger Overmars claimed that Spurs wanted to land Kluivert but send him back to Ajax on loan for two seasons, however the Dutch giants did not take those talks any further as they wanted to renew the winger’s contract however that seemingly now won’t happen.

“In the talks with Spurs about Sánchez, we later spoke about Justin,’:said Overmars. “Spurs’ proposal was that he would play in Amsterdam for two more years and that he would then go to Spurs. It did not go further, because we wanted to renew the contract with Justin, just as we would like to now,”
