Pochettino early favourite for Madrid job as Zidane steps down

According to Eurosport Mauricio Pochettino has emerged as the early favourite to replace Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid following the Frenchman’s shock decision to resign on Thursday.

The Argentine tactician only signed a new five-year deal a week ago but according to Spanish radio station Cadena Cope radio station Pochettino is top of Madrid’s list to replace Zidane, who despite leading Madrid to three successive Champions League titles has parted company with Los Blancos.

The article also adds that Pochettino has a clause in his new Tottenham contract which allows him to speak to a club with the profile of Real Madrid or Paris Saint-Germain but this has indeed been disputed by reports in England.

Guti, the former Bernebeu Captain, is also in contention after working with the club’s youth teams and another option could be Germany manager Joachim Low.

Spurs appointed Pochettino in 2014 and despite limited resources he has overseen huge progress in terms of quality and achievement albeit without managing to win a trophy.

He raised questions about his future at the end of the season saying: “Tottenham need more time, of course with me or another” however his new contract seemed to have put any doubts to bed but the former Espanyol manager has been consistently linked with a move to Madrid and he is now likely to field interest from Madrid supremo Florentino Perez.
