Pochettino hails Spurs “amazing” progress

According to ESPN Mauricio Pochettino has insisted Tottenham have made “amazing” progress this season and to find themselves with the chance to finish third with two games left is “ideal”.

We have been on a bad run of form after crashing out of the FA Cup semi-finals, and have only one Premier League win in the last four ahead of our penultimate game of the season against Newcastle.

We could still finish third with two victories but we could drop out of the Champions League places altogether after Chelsea closed the gap to two points last weekend.

However Pochettino said: “For me we have made amazing progression. With two games left, to have the possibility to finish third is massively successful.

He added: “You need to compare every season in context, not out of context. At White Hart Lane we won 17 out of 19 games last season. We were playing fantastic football. We were very confident. When you finish second and move to Wembley, there were a lot of fears because the Champions League wasn’t great last season.

He went on to say: “I think in this context it’s an amazing season. But I understand people want more. We want more.We are ambitious. Like in football, when you need patience to break down your opponent – we need that. We need to work hard, be focused.”

Have something to tell us about this article?

  1. All things considered—and he does tend to think around an issue rather than just latch on to one aspect of it—Pochettino is right. After last season’s performance in the European Champions League in an ‘easy’ group, Spurs may not have inspired many people with confidence when this season we got drawn in the toughest group, and yet our players and tactics adopted were so good that we ended up top of our group. The much more experienced Juventus looked relieved to have squeaked through the second leg and and one of them was cocky enough at the end to insult our team a bit. It was a nervous arrival for us at Wembley Stadium this season, and yet things turned out in all competitions except the ‘Caribou’ League Cup far better than was feared. There have been some great performances by Spurs ‘home’ and away, though really all matches have been played away. Spurs are admired, feared, respected but also resented by some rival clubs, because the Spurs’ improvement hasn’t been some ‘flash in the pan’ but season after season seems to have been even better than the season before.
