Polish Media Link Spurs With Glik

According to Polish website Sport.pl, Tottenham Hotspur will be attempting to lure Monaco defender Kamil Glik away from the French champions this Summer.

It is reported that Monaco are currently trying to extend Glik’s contract at the club, which apparently still has 3 years left until expiry, and have offered the Polish international a salary of £3.1 million per year.

According to Sport.pl Spurs have informed the 29 year old that if he made the move to Tottenham he’d earn an increased amount of £3.5 million per year instead.

However, Monaco have absolutely no reason to sell the experienced centre-back, given that the defender, who scored 6 goals in 36 league appearances last season, is displaying no insistence to leave.

Therefore, I think we can safely assume this rumour will come to nothing. I’m very eager to see who Spurs will bring in as defensive reinforcements once we actually get around to selling Wimmer.

Right now, the most likely candidates are Swansea’s Alfie Mawson and perhaps Ajax’s Joel Veltman. Who would you prefer?

Have something to tell us about this article?

  1. Yet another player/agent using an alleged Spurs interest to get a better deal from the club he is already with. He would have been a good signing 5 years ago but not now. Same age roughly as Verts and Toby, not the age range Spurs are looking to recruit in.

  2. I would absolutely love for this to happen. In Vertonghen and Alderweireld we have arguably the best centre back pairing in the world, however we often play a back 3 and Vertonghen and Alderweireld do pick up injuries which definitely cost us this season (particularly because Dier cant defend well in a back 2 and goes to sleep even in a back 3). Then factor in that Wimmer (who did a sterling job covering vertonghen in 15/16) is on his way out. Walker is also looking likely to leave and I think that will also weaken our back 4 significantly if we go to a back 2.

When we played Monaco in the champions league last year, Glik was unplayable, he was everywhere and seemed to shut down every attack we were making. Not only did he look capable of covering Toby and Jan but with our tendency to play 3 at the back, that could make the best back line in global football, particularly necessary if we want to progress next season in the champions league, where it looks like we’ll have a tough group guaranteed.

If you imagine a back 3 or Vertonghen, Alderweireld and Van Dijk (obviously we would never even be in the running to sign Van Dijk), playing in front of Lloris, behind Wanyama and Dembele, with Rose and Walker/Trippier either side, it gives you an idea of just how good we could be with that 3rd top central defender.
