Premier League rivals make contact over Alderweireld transfer

According to article in The Daily Star Manchester United have made ‘phone calls’ to Tottenham over the potential signing of Toby Alderweireld this summer. And the article say the claims are that of Belgian football expert Kristof Terreur.

Alderweireld has been linked with a move away from Spurs following a contract wrangle and subsequently being frozen out by Mauricio Pochettino following an injury, and Manchester United will look to strengthen their defence this summer after a trophy-less season.

The Red Devils were beaten by Chelsea at Wembley on Saturday following a Phil Jones error and a new central defender is top priority for the Old Trafford hierarchy.

“I think Spurs will do that (sell Alderweireld), they have a past of doing that,” Terreur said on the Transfer Talk podcast.

He added: “They will take the money, if a good offer comes in of course.Alderweireld has been injured this season, he has been out for four months, he hasn’t played a lot but his reputation is not damaged. So I think a big manager might make a bid for him.Let’s say even Manchester United, who are looking for a new defender.

He also added: “They have made some phone calls about him already, they haven’t made an offer to Spurs yet.I’m wondering if Spurs are wanting to do business with Manchester United because it’s a direct competitor in the Premier League. So I don’t know if they want to do business with them.”
