Rumour Mill: Chelsea Pursuing Toby?

According to reports from The Evening Standard, Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld is a potential transfer target at Stamford Bridge, who’d be willing to pay the Belgian more than double his current wages.

Back in March, 28 year old Toby Alderweireld went public with the news that he wanted his importance in the squad to be reflected in his pay, which is rumoured to be roughly £50,000 per week.

In today’s football financial climate, that’s a touch on the low side for someone of Alderweireld’s calibre and quality.

Team-mates Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris are rumoured to be the club’s top earners, reportedly claiming a weekly wage of somewhere between £100,000-£110,000.

Earlier in the week, it was revealed once again that Toby was seeking salary parity with Tottenham’s highest earners, yet The Daily Mail recently reported that contract renewal negotiations had reached a standstill.

Now, The Evening Standard are reporting that not just Manchester City are watching the situation, but now also London rivals Chelsea are keen on landing the reliable Belgian this Summer.

However, it is also understood that Chelsea’s primary defensive target is Southampton’s Virgil Van Dijk, and that if Chelsea even attempted to bid for Alderweireld, any offers would be snubbed by the Tottenham hierarchy.

The contract negotiations, though seemingly at a deadlock, are likely to eventually continue given the willingness on both sides to meet a deal, as reported by The Daily Mail.

Spurs apparently have the option to trigger a one-year extension on Toby’s contract, a release clause of £25 million will become active when the centre-back is 30, in 2019.
