Rumour Mill: Tottenham Linked With La Liga Striker?

According to Football.London and 90min.com, Tottenham are odds on favourites to sign Kevin Gameiro from Atletico Madrid ahead of Premier League rivals Manchester United.

The reports reveal that the bookies have Spurs at 4/1 odds for picking up the Frenchman’s signature, whereas Manchester United are at just 6/1. Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid are also in the running, but apparently much less likely to pick up the striker at 8/1 each.

Gameiro is a proven goal-scorer in Spain, having netted 16 times in all competitions this season following a £27 million move from Sevilla last Summer. Over the three years he spent with Sevilla, he scored 67 goals in 145 appearances and Spurs may be looking for an experienced striker to partner Harry Kane next season ahead of Vincent Janssen who’s struggled to acclimatise to Premier League football.

However, both articles note that Gameiro’s departure from Atletico Madrid is likely dependent on whether or not Diego Costa returns to Los Colchoneros from Chelsea this Summer.

I feel as though this is a very loose link. Kevin Gameiro is 30 years old, which would be a signing that simply doesn’t match Pochettino’s philosophy. We know that Poch will be looking towards the youth this Summer, so I can’t see him splashing out on anyone over the age of 24. That said, the bookies certainly disagree with me. But what do you think? Is this a plausible or desirable transfer?
