Rumour Mill: Wonderkid Tottenham Bound?

According to Spanish news outlet AS, Tottenham Hotspur are in ‘prime position’ to sign 19 year old Barcelona midfielder Carles Alena.

Though game-time has been hard to come by for the young Spaniard, Carles Alena has been tipped as one of the most exciting prospects in La Liga.

However, delays over a new contract have stirred up speculation surrounding his future at Barcelona and teams are now circling the Nou Camp like sharks for the teenager’s signature.

Spurs are reportedly the most likely side to tempt the Barcelona youth graduate away from the Nou Camp this Summer, amidst reports that Alena has been unwilling to sign a new contract in Spain.

If they are swift about their business, Tottenham may be able to snap up the wonderkid for as cheap as £2.6 million too, due to a release clause set to rise at the end of the month.

The youngster’s contract with the Spanish giants is due to enter its final year on the 1st of July, which will see the release clause rise from £2.6 million to £10.5 million, therefore, both clubs will need to move quickly.

Barcelona have already lost out on two of their youth players under exactly the same circumstances, with Jordi Mboula having moved to Monaco and 16 year old Eric Garcia on the brink of a move to Manchester City.

I don’t know much about Alena, but for £2.6 million, it would be a pretty low risk transfer. I say try it on. If it doesn’t fit, at least it wasn’t expensive. But what do you think?
