Schalke have claimed that they do not expect to complete a deal for Lewis Holtby any time soon.
The Tottenham midfielder has found himself somewhat out of favour since Tim Sherwood has taken over the managerial reigns at White Hart Lane with the likes of Nabil Bentaleb leaping above the German Under-21 international in the pecking order.
However, a return to Schalke looks doubtful since the Bundesliga outfit claim they do not have the finances to make such a deal happen. Holtby has always shown plenty of effort when putting on the Spurs shirt and a lot of fans would be sad to see him leave should he depart N17.
Schalke coach Jens Keller said: “We can’t really imagine such a transfer financially. Talks have not yet reached an advanced stage.
“Lewis has already played as a defensive midfielder under me. He can play there and is tactically very well-schooled.”
