An article on the club website describes how Teddy Sheringham said back in August, 2015 that Harry Kane reminded him of his former strike partner and Spurs icon Jurgen Klinsmann and indeed now how the former England forward has expressed his delight that Kane had broken his scoring record.
It was at the end of his breakthrough season, 2015-16, when Harry scored 31 goals, that Teddy said he ‘had everything’. and the article adds that this time last year, Teddy described him as ‘a class act’ after grabbing a hat-trick in the FA Cup win at Fulham.
It goes on to say say now it’s gone full circle with Harry, still only 24, surpassing Teddy on two counts in the last fortnight with his goals against AFC Wimbledon in the FA Cup taking him past Teddy’s 124 goals in all competitions for Spurs, and up to ninth on our all-time goalscoring list and then on Saturday with his two goals against Everton taking him past Teddy’s 97 goals in the Premier League, a Club record.
“He’s special, isn’t he?” said Teddy, speaking to the club exclusively from Kolkata (Calcutta), India, where he’s now coaching ATK in the Indian Super League.
He added: “I’ve spoken about him a lot of the last few years and I’m delighted it’s Harry who has broken my record.He’s a great lad and he wants to get better and better, even now. He’s at the top but he still wants to learn. He’s got the perfect manager and he’s playing for the Club the perfect time.”
The article goes on to describe how Sheringham scored over 350 goals in his club career spanning 25 years – 1983 to 2008 – including his 124 for us in two spells and was capped 51 times by England between 1993-2002, scoring another 11 on international duty.
It goes on to say how he has noted how Harry is scoring ‘all sorts of goals’, particularly a couple of ‘scrappy’ goals against Everton.
“Harry scores from long range, close range, curlers, headers…but as a striker you have to score your scrappy goals as well,” added Teddy. The two goals he scored against Everton to break the record epitomised that, getting into the six-yard box and putting away the tap-ins. The glory goals can soon dry up when you are having a tricky spell but if you keep scoring the tap-ins, they keep up the ratio, and that’s what you’ve got to do.”
