Sloppy defending could cost Spurs this season

While everyone (including the king of fickle fans himself “Lord Sugar”) was hammering the demoralised Roberto Soldado for his dreadful miss on Thursday night against Dnipro, I couldn’t help but notice just how terrible our defence was.

Danny Rose is a player that comes under a lot of criticism from the Spurs faithful, and his diabolical performance against Dnipro goes a long way to proving his critics right, I simply lost count how many times he was caught out of position, thus putting our defence under so much pressure, how negligent was AVB to let Benny go out on loan to QPR and not replace him? Our weak link is certainly the left-back position and I fear this could inevitably cost us fourth place.

Furthermore our lack of pace in the centre back positions is alarming, Uncle Brad had to be at his best as we were consistently split open at the back, Michael Dawson is a player I have a lot of respect for as he always wears his heart on his sleeve, however his form has been poor this season and I am afraid that he just isn’t good enough for the first eleven any more.

I can only pray that Kaboul is fit to play for the rest of the season, as when we played against Newcastle I was very impressed with the centre back partnership of Verts and Kaboul, and we looked far more solid that day. Kaboul has pace, he is a good leader and isn’t afraid to give some of his fellow defenders the hair dryer treatment if they are not doing their job.

Looking forward I am glad we got that away game against Dnipro out of the way, the players certainly didn’t look up for it in the freezing cold on that awful pitch !, however it will be a different game at the Lane for the return tie, I am sure the lads will take the game to them and score plenty of goals (we will need to with our defence !) to wipe that smile of Ramos’s face !, In hindsight I am grateful that Tim rested most of our important players in preparation for the Norwich game on Sunday, as three points is vital, although it will almost certainly cost poor Chris Hughton his job!
