Spurs not far off trophy success believes former boss

Former Spurs manager Tim Sherwood believes the club will soon be challenging for Premier League and Champions League titles, insisting all they need is experience to reach the top level.

Heartbreakingly we were knocked out of the Champions League by Juventus on Wednesday, with the Italian giants coming back from 1-0 down to win 2-1 at Wembley – progressing to the quarter-finals 4-3 on aggregate.

The knives were out for Mauricio Pochettinho as he came under fire following the game, with claims he was ‘out-coached’ by Juve boss Massimiliano Allegri and even suggestions that he is running out of time to win silverware with the north London club.

However Sherwood has hit back at that criticism, telling talkSPORT he would not swap Spurs’ young squad for Juventus’ – such is his confidence that they are not far off winning silverware.

Speaking this morning on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show, Sherwood said: “To criticise Pochettinho and the Tottenham players is unfair.Allegri is getting a lot of credit for changing it, but he was forced to. You would have to say that Allegri got it wrong from the start.

Sherwood adds: “Juventus were getting outplayed at Wembley, just like how they were outplayed in the first leg.The difference between the two sides on the night was Juventus have a lot of experience and they are just so clinical. They scored with the two big changes they got and once they went in front I never ever thought they were going to throw it away.

Sherwood went on to say: “Tottenham continued to pile it on them but they just never panicked and that just comes with experience. This is top level football, the highest level in the Champions League, and quality players will punish you.

He added:”But Tottenham have got quality players too – I wouldn’t swap Tottenham’s squad for Juve’s.Moving forward, I think if you look at the players, pound-for-pound, I would have Tottenham’s squad all day over Juventus’ squad – but they just know how to get the job done.”

Our European dreams might be over this season, but Sherwood believes silverware is just around the corner,he said: “They are still fighting in the FA Cup,Tottenham are on their way to winning something,” he added. They’re progressing every year and I think they’ve got the squad to challenge for the Premier League and the Champions League.

He went on to say: “They beat Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund this season and they came very close to knocking out Juventus. Now they have to dust themselves down, don’t take it too hard and try and win some silverware – I think they’ve got a real chance in the FA Cup this season. If they do win it, they will get that belief which will stand them in good stead in any competition going forward.”
