Spurs ready to sell Alderweireld

Talks have supposedly reached an impasse and are the club are reportedly ready to sanction Toby Alderweireld’s exit in the summer with the blessing of Mauricio Pochettino.

Alderweireld currently earns around £50,000 a week, but is supposedly demanding three times that to have parity with the club’s biggest earners.

He has just returned from a three-month injury, and the Belgian defender has had problems trying to regain his place in the starting XI even being left out of the Champions League last-16 first leg away to Juventus despite saying he was ready

Reports last week suggested Real Madrid were lining up a move for the 28-year-old, soon to be 29, as Zinedine Zidane seeks to revamp his squad and Manchester United are also said to be monitoring Alderweireld’s situation, with Jose Mourinho have growing doubts over Phil Jones and Chris Smalling.

And now according to The Times, Tottenham are ready to sell Alderweireld for £25million which is the clause in his contract and Pochettino has supposedly backed the decision and feels having a strict wage structure is necessary if he can improve other areas of his squad.

The article also adds that we are also believed to be negotiating new deals for Christian Eriksen and Son Heung-min.

The Times you’d say tends to be more credible when it comes to reporting but I’m sure Mauricio will clear it up in his press conference today.

  1. Selling Toby is just the beginning of players who could earn 3 times their wages at Spurs starting to head for the exit. How can we compete with the best if as soon as we assemble a decent team we start losing the main players. This is ludicrous and if it does happen I for one won’t be renewing my season ticket so filling the new stadium might prove difficult if others feel the same!

  2. “and now according to The Times, Tottenham are ready to sell Alderweireld for £25million which is the clause in his contract”

Why on earth would we sell this summer for £25m when we can keep him for another season and sell at the same price then? If we’re looking to sell it’s because it’s our final chance realistically to sell him at market value, which is obviously at least double that.

Will be gutted to see him go, but we’ve done seriously well out of Toby, getting a world class CB for £12m at bargain wages for 3 seasons. Sadly our inability to pay the wages required is a reflection of where we still are in the pecking order.

  3. The £25m million clause only becomes effective if we trigger the additional year in his contract. So if we don’t do that, he has a year left in the summer and we can sell him for whatever figure we can get. It is a real shame to see him go, but he has moved around a lot. Left Southampton after just a year there. So he has stayed on lower money for some time while this has gone on and clearly shown he either gets the figure he wants or will go elsewhere to get it. I just hope we sell him to a team abroad.
