Vertonghen calm on Alderweireld future

Jan Vertonghen says he is relaxed about the future of club teammate and fellow Belgium international Toby Alderweireld.

Alderweireld has been linked with a move away from the club at the end of the season with the 29-year-old yet to pen a new deal.

“Whenever we play we understand each other”:Vertonghen told Sky Sports News. “When I left for Tottenham, Toby left for Atletico [Madrid] and Southampton but we found each other quite quick after that, so no stress.

Jan added: “We’ve been playing together for a long time and we know how to play together, but I don’t want to speak about this because it might sound disrespectful to whoever is playing next to me or next to Toby in other situations.”

Toby is under contract until 2020, but there is that much talked about £25 million release clause that will be activated in the summer of 2019 if he does not agree to new terms.

The centre-back has been making his way back from long term injury in recent weeks — and looked set to return to the side in January — however he has only featured twice for us since November after suffering a hamstring injury, missing both Champions League encounters with Juventus. However he is away with the Belgian squad so will certainly be in contention for the trip to Chelsea.
